Q. Why volunteer with HammondCare?

We believe that volunteering is one of the most meaningful experiences that you can have as you contribute to your local community with people who are in need. You’ll meet dedicated staff who have a genuine approach for caring for the frail and elderly who may have complex health needs.

As an independent Christian charity, we’re innovative in our approach to health and aged care and in the services we provide – we seek to lead rather than follow.

Q. Where can I volunteer with HammondCare?

Q. What will I be doing when I volunteer?

Ideally when you volunteer with us, you’ll be participating in an activity that you already love and want to share it with others. Or perhaps you’re looking to gain a new skill and meet people.

There are a range of volunteer opportunities you get involved in, from being a social visitor to driving a mini-bus and so many more. Visit our Residential, Hospital and HammondCare At Home sections for more details.

Q. How many hours do you require from volunteers?

In our experience, we’ve found that volunteers who are committed on a regular basis over a long period of time gain a deep sense of personal satisfaction.

Ideally you’ll be available for at least one hour per week over a 12 month or longer period. This may vary from role-to-role and location, so we encourage you to speak with us about your interests and availability.

Q. I’m interested in visiting someone in their home. How will you know if we’ll get along?

When you become one of our HammondCare At Home volunteers you’ll be visiting people who may be lonely or socially isolated in their own homes. Our Volunteer Leader will meet with you, learn about your interests and do the same with clients. They’ll then look for someone close to your home who may have similar interests. At the first introduction meeting, the Volunteer Leader will be present at your first meeting with the client to help with introductions and start the conversation going.

Q. Are there any short-term volunteering opportunities?

Our volunteering focus at HammondCare is provide quality opportunities to build relationships with our residents, patients and clients. We feel that to do this successfully our volunteering opportunities are long-term, ideally with a commitment from our volunteers of at least an hour per week or fortnight for 12 months and longer. From time-to-time we may advertise for short-term project opportunities.

Q. I’ve never volunteered before, do I need any particular skills?

We often say that all someone needs to volunteer is an open mind and heart, and a passion for the elderly.

There may be some volunteer roles that do require specific skills or qualifications, such as a current drivers licence if you’re a mini-bus driver, or advanced computer and literacy skills if you’re a biography writing volunteer. If you’re interested in a role that requires a specific skill set, we’ll discuss this with you during the interview stage.

Q. I’m looking to complete the Duke of Edinburgh award service component. Can I do this with HammondCare?

The Duke of Edinburgh award is a structured program empowering youth to explore their full potential. We welcome students to volunteer with us if you’re willing to commit a minimum of 60 hours service in one of our residential care homes. Please note that student places are very limited and we may not be able to accommodate every request.

Q. How will HammondCare support me?

We’re passionate about providing all our volunteers training and support, from the moment you join us and beyond. You’ll attend a two day orientation training sessions alongside our new staff members, delivered by our trainers from the HammondCare College. You’ll learn about HammondCare, our mission in action focus, loss and grief as well as communication skills.

Depending on your volunteer role, you may also undergo additional training in the areas of food safety and handling or transportation.

Q. I’m looking for a job or I’m looking to complete a work placement. Can I volunteer?

Volunteering with us isn’t a pathway to a paid role at HammondCare nor to gain experience if you need to complete work placements.

Q. I would like to raise funds for HammondCare. How can I help?

The HammondCare Foundation was established to help the organisation continue to grow. All funds raised will go towards helping HammondCare continue to expand and improve services for the vulnerable and marginalised in our community. You can help by contacting your local HammondCare site and visit our Hammond Care Foundation page for more details.

Q. I work full time during the week. Can I volunteer on the weekend or evenings?

The majority of our volunteer opportunities are during the week between the hours of 9am – 5pm. There are opportunities to volunteer on the weekend or evenings and we can discuss this with you during the interview process.

Q. How can my company get involved and volunteer as a team?

Q. How do I apply to be a HammondCare volunteer?

We’ve tried to keep it simple when applying to become a HammondCare volunteer.
1. Contact our Volunteer Leaders via free call 1800 79 33 99 or email volunteer@hammond.com.au
2. We’ll set up an interview time and invite you to complete an application form. We’ll also arrange for a police background check.
3. Successful applicants will receive an offer to join us as a volunteer and we’ll arrange for you to attend two days of training.
4. When you start as a volunteer, you won’t be alone! You’ll have another volunteer who will be your buddy and introduce you to people and guide you on your volunteering journey. You’ll also be supported by your local Volunteer Leader.
